Salary Range - is based on specific license and specific/or relevant experience. 


The Substance Abuse Specialist (Social Worker/LMSW) assesses new intakes for substance abuse, provides individual and group counseling, education, prevention and referrals to outside resources as well. The Substance Abuse Specalist will provide clinical expertise to the treatment team and others on the matter of substance abuse and treatment and recovery. Social Service delivery is to be consistent with Good Shepherd Services Philosophy, the function and tasks of the RIC (Rapid Intervention Center) and Marian Hall Group Residence and within any city and state mandates.

Location:        337 East 17th Street, NY, NY 10003


Hours:             35 hours/ Fulltime


Major Duties:

  • Perform intake and assessment interviews to determine substance abuse treatment needs.
  • Provide short term substance abuse counseling; individual, group and family counseling. .
  • Function as member of multidisciplinary treatment team. Participate in Family Team Conferences.
  • Participate in meetings both weekly and as needed with youth development staff, school and other staff for case collaboration and planning.
  • Arrange for substance abuse referrals.
  • Develop and maintain linkages with a broad range of substance abuse treatment providers and other appropriate resources in the community.
  • Develop protocols for prevention, assessment and treatment of substance abuse issues on behalf of all youth in need.
  • Identify substance abuse needs and determine service intervention for participants with identified substance abuse issues in collaboration with social worker and multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide substance abuse information and education to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist with case management and maintain mandated paperwork and recordkeeping in compliance with ACS, OCFS and GSS PEP Department.
  • Effectively use and practice the Sanctuary Model tools within job scope and promote and model the seven Sanctuary Model commitments to create a nonviolent and trauma-sensitive culture.
  • Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Master’s degree in Social Work and licensure ( New York State LMSW) required.
  • LCSW preferred
  • CASAC eligible
  • Experience working with adolescents and families required; foster care/ACS experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience working within substance abuse treatment/service environment required.
  • Knowledge of and experience in family systems/dynamics and multicultural considerations of families.
  • Demonstrated competence in verbal, written, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Capability to transition easily between working independently with a high degree of self-initiative and contributing as part of a team.
  • Excellent crisis intervention, advocacy and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, youth development and trauma-informed perspective.
  • Must have a commitment to GSS models of practice including Sanctuary and ACS principles to promote permanency, safety, and well being.
